Stony Brook Medicine (Stony Brook University Hospital) Senior Lab Worker in Stony Brook, New York

Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, a Senior Lab Worker is a valuable member of our team. Under the direction of the Department Supervisor, she /he will be responsible for oversight of specimen receiving operations to assist in ensuring accurate and timely reporting of patient results and compliance with all regulatory standards. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Duties of a Senior Lab Worker may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Functions as a shift supervisor directing personnel and activities. Interacts in a professional manner with other shift supervisors and the hospital community to ensure proper processing of specimens.
  • Directs staff during LIS/Cerner downtime and recovery. Coordinates manual delivery of laboratory test results to units. Communicates downtime issues and resolutions with other Laboratory Department LIS System Managers.
  • On-site resource on a daily basis for Specimen Receiving for computer issues. If necessary, forwards concerns to Laboratory LIS Coordinator/on-call Lab IT staff, Department Supervisor and/or Coordinator.
  • Assures staff compliance with all relevant laboratory and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Will train new staff to perform all duties related to the proper functioning of the department.
  • Prepares specimens for analysis performing centrifugation pouring off specimens, etc. according to established protocol for each requested test. Specimens poured off/labelled accurately. Requisitions are processed correctly. Accessions STATs ASAP.
  • Reviews all patient specimens received for proper labeling to ensure proper patient identification and check for appropriate sample type and size for the ordered test procedure.
  • Handles all processing of biological specimens in the optimal way to assure specimen integrity and maintain all safety regulations as per established policies and procedures, including those of the reference laboratories.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies and alternates stock to obtain maximum benefits. Helps with stocking laboratory stations with needed supplies.
  • Demonstrate computer competency to obtain pertinent data for order entry, LSARD registration and result reporting, etc. accurately and efficiently.
  • Records data accurately and maintains records of laboratory reports as assigned. Oversees and performs other clerical related duties.
  • Maintains all records and patient files in accordance with University Hospital and departmental policies and procedures. This will include regulatory agency mandates for laboratories from NYSDOH CLEP, CAP and JCAHO.
  • Accessions patient specimens utilizing the computer system and/or manual procedures.
  • Become proficient in proper use of Modular Pre-analytics (MPA) as appropriate.
  • Answers telephone courteously, relays messages and provides information on laboratory services, specimen collection, requirements and status of specimens.
  • Make calls to give lab results or answers telephones to provide information on availability of patient results, specimen collection information and addition of tests to existing orders.
  • Provides information to patients, hospital staff, community physicians, agency and institutional clients, etc. related to laboratory testing, specimen collection, laboratory services, result reporting and specimen tracking.
  • Reports all problems to the supervisor.
  • Completes SB Safe reporting as appropriate. Trains staff in SB Safe protocol.
  • Will be required to provide backup support in laboratory stat service and serve as a runner in transporting specimens between MART building and main hospital and between different departments within the department of laboratory.
Qualifications
Required: Two years full-time experience in a clinical laboratory. Excellent communication skills. Competency with computer applications. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent and proven problem solving and decision-making skills.
Preferred: High School Diploma, BS/BA/AA or some college credits.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The salary for this position has been established at $38,073.

The above salary represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation at the time of posting.

In addition, all full-time CSEA positions have an additional $3,087
