Stony Brook Medicine (Stony Brook University Hospital) Chaplain in Stony Brook, New York

Position Summary:

At the Long Island State Veterans Home, the Chaplain is responsible for conducting religious services and providing spiritual guidance for our residents.

Duties of a Chaplain for the Protestant denomination may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Conducts religious services and provides spiritual guidance for the Protestant residents.
  • Establishes periods of worship.
  • Counsels individual Protestant residents on spiritual and emotional problems.
  • Conducts pastoral calling on the Protestant residents in order to develop relationships with residents.
  • Pays particular attention to Protestant residents suffering emotional crises, the critically ill and dying, and newly admitted residents in need of support.
  • Conducts religious education program to benefit the Protestant residents through organizing such activities as classes, group discussions and forums.
  • Works closely with medical, nursing and rehabilitation staff to further Protestant resident progress.
  • Consults with other chaplains and administration in order to coordinate the religious program and its relationship to the overall functions of the facility.
  • Maintains records of religious activities.
  • Informs community about facility and programs.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must possess ecclesiastical endorsement from the official endorsing agency of the Chaplains faith or denomination at the time of appointment and maintain such endorsement for the duration of their employment.

Legitimate Operational Needs: Affiliated with Protestant Church with ability to perform worship services to the Protestant congregation.

The Long Island State Veterans Home is a tobacco-free environment. Tobacco products are strictly prohibited anywhere on our 25-acre campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas on the premises.

This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.

The Long Island State Veterans Home operates on a biweekly payroll system. The work schedules begin on Thursday and end on Wednesday of each week.

Essential Position: This position has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. This means that when the Long Island State Veterans Home is faced with an emergency, employees in such positions are required to remain at their work location or to report to work.

The LISVH is a 24/7 skilled nursing facility. As such, all positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary to meet the operating needs of the facility.

The use of Vacation or Personal Leave accruals during the first 6 months of employment will not be authorized unless prior approval has been granted by Human Resources.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Long Island State Veterans Home Employee Health Department
  • Meet regulatory requirements for pre-employment screening.
  • Submit three (3) written references.
  • Provide a copy of the required license(s)/certificate(s).
