The AVP of Underwriting, BizChoice: Provides underwriting leadership and marketing support for Paul Hanson’s BizChoice brand. The strongest candidates will have at least 5-10 years’ experience in underwriting and transportation insurance, preferably in the Last Mile Delivery and Trucking segments.

Scope of Responsibilities:

  • Reports to the Chief Underwriting Officer

  • Apply for-hire transportation expertise to inform Program Management and Product Development with carrier, reinsurance, and distribution partners

  • Build relationships with aggregators and vendor partners to educate them on program appetite and promote program business

  • Collaborate with the VP of BizChoice, the internal Marketing Team, and distribution partners to target program marketing according to underwriting appetite

  • Receive and evaluate applicants’ information for risk acceptability and within program parameters for new and/or renewal customers through an understanding of company policies, procedures and standards and proper application to risks

  • Research outside sources for additional and supporting information

  • Calculate premiums and appropriate amounts of coverage – recommend program changes or enhancements based on our products and services

  • Be cognizant of program and own underwriting authority and referral standards and work within authority and refer to others when needed or outside own authority

  • Negotiate terms and conditions with agents and brokers on submitted accounts

  • Properly document the exposures, coverages, limits and pricing on individual risks with the prescribed service guidelines and maintain underwriting files within company program and company requirements

  • Provide a high level of service through the product life cycle from submission to quote to post bind activities including endorsement requests, loss control evaluation, post-loss analysis, filings and cancellations, as examples

  • Deliver profitable growth with proper pricing and underwriting discipline.

  • Be self-directed with minimal day-to- day supervision

  • May be called upon to perform projects or other research to further the business’s goals and objectives

Job Requirements

  • 5 to 7 years experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience (High School Diploma/GED required)

  • Relevant graduate level education and/or advanced certifications preferred

  • Multi-line experience including automobile, inland marine, and Workers’ Compensation

  • Willing and able to travel up to 25% of the time

The compensation for this position is a variable comp structure. As such, the total salary paid will vary directly depending on the successful candidate’s book of business at any particular time. The range for this position is $125,000-$135,000 and could be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
