Navistar, Inc. Senior Project Engineer - Software Architect in Lisle, Illinois

Position Overview

Navistar Vehicle and Powertrain Controls Software team is responsible for electronic controls and software requirements, design, coding, testing, software integration and releases.The Senior Project Engineer - Software Architect is responsible for the development of software architecture constructs, for new modules including but not limited to software architecture construction, participation in requirements and design development, and ongoing support of software architecture issues.

This position is part of Application software team developing Controls and Software logic for all Navistar owned ECU applications including Electrification, ADAS systems, Engine Controls, Powertrain Controls, Body – Cab Controls, Chassis Controls, and Instrument Cluster, etc

Responsibilities

  • Development of software architecture constructs for ECUs

  • Understand, communicate, and roll out the software architecture strategy and requirements for various controls software functions/domains

  • Responsible for making high-level software architecture choices and decisions for software projects

  • Participation in the requirements, design development, and implementation of software solutions

  • Translate Controls and Software roadmap needs and requirements into technical requirements for software applications

  • Take a software project and decide which platforms, languages, frameworks, libraries, tools, and other technologies should be used

  • Ensures development teams follow best practices, coding standards, and technical requirements

  • Guide the software development process through high-level decision making

  • Define and document software architecture approaches and requirements

  • Coach and mentor software function development engineers, and other team members

  • Define design and code standard requirements meeting architecture requirements

  • Serve as a technical liaison among project managers, developers, and stakeholders

  • Ongoing support of software architecture issues

  • Locating and directing solutions for critical challenges involving software & hardware interface

  • Collaborate closely and work in tandem with the EE Architecture team to understand next-generation design deeply

  • Own the process of collecting organizational feedback on the designs and continuously improving them accordingly

  • Communicate the ideas to internal stakeholders and leadership for alignment

  • Guide and support the execution-focused teams through the process of taking the architecture designs through software development, validation, and production phases

  • Keep up to date with the latest advancements in the automotive service functions architecture

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science

  • At least 8 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science

  • At least 6 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • PhD in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science

  • At least 3 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience

  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

Additional Requirements

Desired Skills

  • Hands-on software architecture, design, and development experience in a fast-paced technology-focused organization in the automotive space

  • Proven expertise in one or more technical areas such as Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Software-defined Vehicles, Embedded Linux, Android Automotive, CANFD/CAN/LIN/Ethernet network communication software, Infotainment/Cockpit, ADAS, Cybersecurity, etc

  • Proven new vehicle launch experience from design to production

  • Experience with multiple embedded software architectures (such as QNX or embedded Linux)

  • Skilled in Classic and Adaptive AUTOSAR system development

  • Strong expertise in architecture design software such as PREEVision, or similar

  • Good understanding of vehicle EE architectures and integration processes

  • Good knowledge of automotive safety standards, requirements, and design

  • Good knowledge of automotive cybersecurity standards, requirements, and design

  • Exceptional attention to detail and precision

  • Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong familiarity with emerging connected, software-defined vehicle technologies

  • Must be comfortable with operating in a fast-paced, agile environment

  • Skilled with engineering toolchains such as MS Visio, MATLAB, Simulink

  • Experience with requirement documentation and system engineering

  • Experience in controls and software functional areas, such as Electric Vehicle, ADAS and Autonomous (Radar, Lidar, Camera, Autonomous processor, etc.), Functional Safety (ISO26262), Vehicle Communications and Network, Infotainment, Cab and Body Controls

  • Embedded hardware design and development experience

  • Experience with Vehicle, Powertrain or Engine Controls System design

  • Supplier management and development experience

  • Experience with engineering and quality design and development methodologies: (8D, FMEA, DVP&R)

  • CAN/UDS and/or J1939 development and debugging experience (Vector CANalyzer/CANoe knowledge helpful)

  • Familiarity with Embedded software development process

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively and establish good working relationships across departments
