Summary

The University of Michigan Department of Cardiac Surgery Section of Health Services and Research Quality (HSRQ) is seeking a full-time Database Analyst/Programmer Intermediate to support various projects across the department, including a significant role in the MI-AORTA program within the Frankel Cardiovascular Center. This program is dedicated to advancing research and improving outcomes in aortic diseases and is an integral part of our commitment to pioneering developments in cardiac care.

As part of HSRQ section, which is a nationally recognized leader in health services research and quality improvement efforts, the Department needs additional support to advance both internally and externally funded projects that will help achieve its mission in the areas of patient care, research, and education.

In this role, the Database Analyst/Programmer Intermediate will work with a highly collaborative group of clinicians, researchers, project managers, administrators, and analysts within the Department of Cardiac Surgery and the Frankel Cardiovascular Center. The selected candidate will have broad responsibilities, including the management and analysis of complex data sets related to cardiovascular diseases, and opportunities for professional growth. Applicants for this position must be driven, possess intellectual curiosity and a desire to continue learning, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects at once.

This position is fully remote, but may occasionally require in-person attendance for meetings.

Responsibilities*

The Database Analyst/Programmer Intermediate will be able to conduct the following activities with proper guidance and oversight from the Applications Programmer/Analyst Lead:

  • Participate in the preparation of detailed systems design specifications to meet the defined requirements. Activities include the analysis, design and implementation of computer-based information systems to fulfill existing and future needs.

  • Coordinate with system users to determine the final objectives, desired reports, data sources, and data points to be collected.

  • Aid in the development of documentation standards and supporting procedures. Activities include translating detailed design specifications into computer program instructions, debugging routine programs, preparing systems test data, and creating program documentation.

  • Assist with the coordination of interfaces between major systems and programs. Activities include the conceptualization, development and implementation of program designs.

  • Maintain and update existing programs. Activities include conducting comprehensive system and programming tests, debugging malfunctions, recommending system software modifications and/or changes to hardware configurations.

  • Perform systems analysis and programming tasks requiring advanced techniques. May also participate in systems software development and maintenance.

  • Provide technical advice and consultation on difficult analysis and programming problems that require advanced techniques.

  • Prepare block diagrams, flow charts, statements of program objectives, and associated documentation.

  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, health sciences, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and convey technical concepts in a manner that can be easily understood by various audiences.

  • Ability to gather functional requirements from a diverse group of users.

  • Knowledge and understanding of programming languages such as Python, PHP, C#, VB. Including various analysis/visualization packages such as Pandas, numPy, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly

  • Knowledge and understanding of relational databases and SQL.

  • Knowledge and understanding of data visualization and report writing using platforms such as Tableau, PyGWalker, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), Power BI

Desired Qualifications*

  • 3-5 years of work experience in a healthcare setting working with data and reporting

  • 1-2 years of programming activities in a business environment or continuous learning through self-directed study, evidenced by acquiring online certifications from platforms like Codemy,

  • Codecademy or freeCodeCamp

Background Screening
